Power and Motion with Profoto
This is a shooting workshop. We will begin with a brief introduction to the concepts that allow a photographer to express and capture power and motion. You will be introduced to the principles that guide why you would use particular light modifiers and where to position lights to create effect. You will be encouraged to explore how hard, soft, dramatic, or natural your lighting looks are implemented as artistic choices and how to use them to your expressive end.
After the introduction, participants will be guided through 3 specific shooting scenarios that allow each to practice what they have learned. Most importantly you will work in small groups to make images using what you have learned.
- The Drama of a Hero Portrait
- Stopping Movement using short flash duration
- Mixing Ambient and flash lighting for effect, blur for expressive effect
Models and Profoto lighting equipment will be provided.
Please bring you cameras, lenses and memory cards
Event lead by:
Michael Gray of Profoto
Michael’s formal photographic training began at Brooks Institute of Photography. It is there that he learned to light and also where he fell in love with the possibilities of expression through the use of light. After Brooks Michael earned a BFA and MFA in Photography studying with Guggenheim fellow Larry McPherson. It was in art school that Michael cultivated the urge to say something with his photographs.
Michael’s experience includes owning a portrait studio and gallery, co-developing an Art Photography program at Front Range Community College, and having two projects supported by NEA, and Colorado Historical Society grants. Michael also has had a monograph published of his work.
Michael is now the Midwestern Regional Sales Manger for Profoto US. In this amazing role he is able to blend my passion for photographic expression with his love for light while using the most amazing tools in the industry.
